HAKing Innovation Workshop!

Virtual Circuits Class (Kit Included)

Welcome!

If you’re here then your organization has signed up for a future workshop. Here are some things to help you get started!

First off, Who is HAKing Innovation?

HAKing Innovation is a 501c3 organization focused on building confidence and competence using technology as a tool. We provide workshops, summer camps, and curriculum. We also intentionally provide internships for high school and college students in order to build a community of technical talent.

What is this event?

Coding - Circuits - Hardware - Software - LED lights - Arduino

Yup it’s all of those keywords above and more! We like to call it creative circuits! Circuits are everywhere; your phone, laptop, and even in your toothbrushes. We are going to learn what a circuit is and create circuits that light up, respond, and more.

Throughout the class, your student will:

  • Learn what a circuit is.

  • Learn how micro controllers control a circuit

  • Create a simple LED circuit.

  • Learn how to use coding to control that LED.

  • Adapt for their physical kit.

  • Have free time to customize their LED circuit kit.

At the end of the class, your student will have their own LED light program that blinks however the student programs it. They can use this class as a launchpad to dozens of side projects and tinkering galore.

Common side effect include pointing out LEDs in daily life, and a fascination with programming blinking LEDs. Also, your student might ask to connect 1000 LEDs to blink at once… signs of an engineer :)

Get the correct Hardware

Our classes require a laptop and a mouse

Chromebook is okay for this event

Our virtual workshops are taught either through zoom or google meets.

Please check with your org leader and have the correct version ready

Create profiles

We plan to use a few software tools for our workshop.

Tinkercad Circuits: This is the prototyping software we use for this program. You will need to create an account before the class. See below for how to create an account.

Day of

Are you excited? We are. It’s almost time.

To prepare, make sure you have the kit materials needed for the class.

Also log into Tinkercad circuits and keep that tab open for future use.

Our classes tend to run 90 minutes, so make sure you eat before and use the bathroom :).

Want to see an example of what our class will look like? Look here:

In this class, we learned about inputs, outputs, and designed a push-button circuit. This video is only available to participants of Tech Tutor Thursday. P.S...

Other FAQ

  • What will the students be doing?

    • See agenda above

  • Will the class be recorded?

    • We record the class for safety and quality purposes. We do not share student video to social media unless we specifically ask and share the clip/picture before.

  • Who will be in the zoom/Google Meets Call?

    • Only HAKing Innovation staff will be allowed in the call. If we have an engineering guest, they will have already been approved by the organization lead.

  • We don’t have a kit?

    • Please reach out to your org lead as soon as possible.

  • We have multiple students on one laptop?

    • This is not recommended, but it will require your students to share.

  • Can I join along my student

    • Absolutely, we just want to remind you that the challenge is part of the journey. Our teachers are trained to intentionally create challenge points where students might not always have the right answer from the beginning.

    • Help encourage the HAKi way by doing the following

      • Ask the student to describe what the problem is? This helps encourage detailed communication.

      • Ask the student what have they tried?

      • Encourage the student to go step by step? Tech issues can be as detailed as an extra space where it shouldn’t be.

  • Is this class hard?

    • We work to the level of our students. We’re able to go in depth for advance classes, but make sure we set the common knowledge to start. Everyone has their own experience with technology, and circuits can come easily for some and harder for others. Your child is in good hands.

    • If your child does struggle, we do multiple checks during the class to look for this, and will adjust accordingly. Our mission is to build confidence such that students wont shy away from tech careers in the future.

  • Can my student look at material before?

    • SURE! while we might not share the curriculum we use before, we encourage students to always push themselves when they’re curious.

    • The best way to do so it to head to youtube. You can learn a lot from typing in “ [software or kit] Tutorials “ Some key ones to try include

      • Tinkercad circuits tutorial

      • Arduino Introduction

      • What is a circuit
